Emergence

The appearance of behaviors or patterns that arise from many interacting components rather than explicit programming.

Example

A capability appears at larger scale even though it was weak or absent in smaller models.

Why it matters

It gives researchers a way to discuss surprising behavior that was not individually programmed.

You'll hear it

“Did the ability really appear suddenly, or did the test hide earlier progress?”

Can you control it?

Not directly

No, not directly. Emergence describes a learned property, observed result, or broader concept rather than a normal user setting. You may influence it indirectly by changing the tool, data, prompt, or workflow.

Common questions

Does emergence mean the behavior is mysterious forever?
No. Researchers may later identify the conditions or mechanisms that produced it.
Can a test make gradual progress look sudden?
Yes. A pass-or-fail score can hide smaller improvements that happened before the passing point.
Does an unexpected ability mean the model has intentions?
No. A surprising behavior does not by itself show that the model formed goals or desires.
