MCP & Tool Protocols
Tool routing
Directing a request to the appropriate tool, service, or function.
Example
A router sends finance questions to the accounting tool and people questions to HR.
Why it matters
It directs work to the service able to handle that kind of request.
You'll hear it
“Send billing questions to the billing connection.”
Can you control it?
Set by the team
The people building or running the AI choose this setup. An everyday user generally needs their help to change how this part works.
Common questions
- Can routing use fixed rules rather than AI?
- Yes. Many systems use explicit conditions for predictable requests.
- Can a request be routed to more than one service?
- Some designs split work or consult several destinations.
- Does correct routing confirm permission?
- No. The destination still needs to enforce its access rules.
