AI content detection

Using software to estimate whether content was generated or altered by AI.

Example

A reviewer gets a score suggesting an essay might have been written by AI.

Why people use it

It attempts to flag content that may have been made with AI.

What you'll hear

“The detector marked this essay as AI-written.”

What this means for you

Do not accuse someone of cheating based only on a detector score.

Can you control it?

Sometimes

Sometimes. Your choices depend on the tool and your access. The settings available to an everyday user may differ from those available to the people running it.

Common questions

Do different AI detectors agree?
Not always. Different tools can give very different scores to the same piece of writing.
Can human writing be flagged by mistake?
Yes. A person can write text that resembles patterns the detector associates with AI.
Will rewriting AI text make detection reliable?
No. Editing can change the score without establishing who originally wrote the material.
