Chatbot

Software that holds a conversation with people through written messages or speech.

Example

A shop's chatbot answers a question about a return.

Why people use it

It can answer routine questions without making people wait for help.

What you'll hear

“The chatbot handles our delivery questions.”

What this means for you

Check whether the chatbot can access your account or only answer general questions.

Can you control it?

Sometimes

Sometimes. Your choices depend on the tool and your access. The settings available to an everyday user may differ from those available to the people running it.

Common questions

Do all chatbots write their own replies?
Some choose from prepared replies. Others write new ones using AI, which can make unexpected mistakes.
Am I speaking to a person?
Usually not. A chatbot sends automated replies, although a person may take over the conversation.
Will it remember me next time?
Only if the service saves and reuses earlier information. Starting a new chat may lose that background information.
